Lady or the Tiger

Pls give an ending to this story in your comments. Do use the word 'desolate' in your comments.

Lady or the Tiger?
Long ago, in the very olden time, there lived a powerful king. Some of his ideas were progressive. But others caused people to suffer.
One of the king's ideas was a public arena for punishment. Crime punished, or innocence was decided, by the result of chance. When a person was accused of a crime, his future would be judged in the public arena.
All the people would gather in this building. The king sat high up on his ceremonial chair. He gave a sign. A door under him opened. The accused person stepped out into the arena. Directly opposite the king were two doors. They were side by side, exactly alike. The person on trial had to walk directly to these doors and open one of them. He could open whichever door he pleased.
If the accused man opened one door, out came a hungry tiger, the fiercest in the land. The tiger immediately jumped on him and tore him to pieces as punishment for his guilt. The case of the suspect was thus decided.

But, if the accused opened the other door, there came forth from it a woman, chosen especially for the person. To this lady he was immediately married, in honor of his innocence. It was not a problem that he might already have a wife and family, or that he might have chosen to marry another woman. The king permitted nothing to interfere with his great method of punishment and reward.

This was the king's method of carrying out justice. The accused person could not know which door was hiding the lady. He opened either as he pleased, without knowing whether, in the next minute, he was to be killed or married.
Sometimes the fierce animal came out of one door. Sometimes it came out of the other.
This method was a popular one. When the people gathered together on one of the great trial days, they never knew whether they would see a bloody killing or a happy ending. So everyone was always interested.

The king had a beautiful daughter who was like him in many ways. He loved her above all humanity. The princess secretly loved a young man who was the best-looking and bravest in the land. But he was a commoner, not part of an important family.

One day, the king discovered the relationship between his daughter and the young man. The man was immediately put in prison. A day was set for his trial in the king's public arena. This, of course, was an especially important event. Never before had a common subject been brave enough to love the daughter of the king.
The king knew that the young man would be punished, even if he opened the right door. And the king would take pleasure in watching the series of events, which would judge whether or not the man had done wrong in loving the princess.
The day of the trial arrived. From far and near the people gathered in the arena and outside its walls. The king and his advisers were in their places, opposite the two doors. All was ready. The sign was given. The door under the king opened and the lover of the princess entered the arena.

Tall, beautiful and fair, his appearance was met with a sound of approval and tension. Half the people had not known so perfect a young man lived among them. No wonder the princess loved him! What a terrible thing for him to be there!
As the young man entered the public arena, he turned to bend to the king. But he did not at all think of the great ruler. The young man's eyes instead were fixed on the princess, who sat to the right of her father.
From the day it was decided that the sentence of her lover should be decided in the arena, she had thought of nothing but this event.
The princess had more power, influence and force of character than anyone who had ever before been interested in such a case. She had done what no other person had done. She had possessed herself of the secret of the doors. She knew behind which door stood the tiger, and behind which waited the lady. Gold, and the power of a woman's will, had brought the secret to the princess.
She also knew who the lady was. The lady was one of the loveliest in the kingdom. Now and then the princess had seen her looking at and talking to the young man.
The princess hated the woman behind that silent door. She hated her with all the intensity of the blood passed to her through long lines of cruel ancestors.
Her lover turned to look at the princess. His eye met hers as she sat there, paler and whiter than anyone in the large ocean of tense faces around her. He saw that she knew behind which door waited the tiger, and behind which stood the lady. He had expected her to know it.
The only hope for the young man was based on the success of the princess in discovering this mystery. When he looked at her, he saw that she had been successful, as he knew she would succeed.
Then his quick and tense look asked the question: "Which?" It was as clear to her as if he shouted it from where he stood. There was not time to be lost.
The princess raised her hand, and made a short, quick movement toward the right. No one but her lover saw it. Every eye but his was fixed on the man in the arena.
He turned, and with a firm and quick step he walked across the empty space. Every heart stopped beating. Every breath was held. Every eye was fixed upon that man. He went to the door on the right and opened it.
Now, the point of the story is this: Did the tiger come out of that door, or did the lady?
If she showed the tiger's door, her lover would be dead. But if she showed the other door, her lover will marry another woman. She'll lose him again.

And so I leave it with all of you:
Which came out of the open door – the lady, or the tiger?

  2. As the story tells that the King is not that much wise person. If he were a wise person, he wouldn't give this type of cruel punishment to anybody.

So, he plotted to kill the princess's lover. So, he made two gates having Tigers.

The hero went near the right side door & opened it. And at once the tiger came out & killed him. Thus the desolated hero was killed by the cunning king.

After that the princess became very sad for him. But she felt some good in his death. Because he couldn't marry another lady.

And some days later, princess came to know about this by a wise minister. Then she became very angry for his father's deed. She fought with him & committed suicide.

Finally king understood his stupidity & banned the cruel punishment method.

  3. It was a nice story .I like both the princess and the commoner because they loved each other so much, this is evident from the fact that the princess was so trust worthy that the boy before going to open the door saw the face of princess.

According to our Indian culture women are known for their patience and love.I like to be positive that the princess must show the door where a lady would be.

According to me ,the princess must have felt that even if she does not get her lover she wants him to "live". that is a sign of a true love.

But instead if she shows the door where a lion would be, it would be very desolate and terrible and that is not a sign of true love and she might had love him for some other reasons.

The person whom i hate the most is the idiotic, stupidiest king who dosen't know to give punishment. If i slaved the king i would rather give the same punishment to him to make him understood how wreckless the punishment would be .

Then it will be very 'desolate' for the king "isn't it"

would made a signal to her lover to open the door in which a beautiful women waited for him,the princess wanted her lover to live a long life, but she could tolerate her lover with another women, she would
became desolate, she would have committed suicide,on seeing his daughter's death the kind would banned the public arena.

It is clear that the king would punish the lover whatever happens. I think the king should have placed tigers in both the doors. The princess came to know the truth. In the arena the Lover looked in to the eyes of princess for the correct door. But the princess thought that if she not responded for her lover,he would feel DESOLATED by her. So she directed him to the right side door such that he would not get desperated. He opened the door and in notime he was killed by the tiger.Eventhough you thought this conclusion depicts the winning of a cruel king, it is not. The story portraits true love between the princess and her lover.

  8. The princess knew that one door was having the tiger and other having the woman.
The princess should have shown her lover the door having the woman for
his well-being. He opened the door and supposed to marry the woman.
The princess though felt desolated, she was happy that her lover being
alive. After that incidence, the king forced and even begged the
princess to marry .But the princess decided not to marry anyone. The
king realised his wrong way of judging and died in guilt.

  9. The princess knew whatever door her lover would open, in the end he
would be killed by her father. If she would navigate him to the girl's
door he would be supposed to marry her. And her father would kill him
and would make that girl a desolated being. So the princess decided to
navigate him to the tiger's door and he also did so and been killed by
the tiger. On that very moment she slayed herself with her father's
sword infront of the crowd. And finally the king in desolated by his
daughter as well as his people. He killed himself.

  13. what's my intuition says is that,, the lady should come out of the door. why because is that if tiger came out of that door means the commoner who was an innocent would be killed..
As the princess knows the rules of the kingdom she would obey the rules that at any moment an innocent would not be killed even if his father doesn't obey them..
She also had such a magical power to know what might be inside the door, so she would direct the innocent to open the door which is having the lady even after knowing the fact that she would lose her lover..
Finally the commoner and the beautiful lady were married. However the princess and the commoner were desolated they led their their life happily when days pass over..

The young man doesn't want to live with another girl, since if he lives with another girl sure he will feel guilty that he lost the life of princess ,this is also similar to death for the true person in the world. love doesn't die forever.

  26. He was standing before the two doors. He looked at the Princess. They looked at each other for a minute. Then both of them closed their eyes. He was thinking the incident happened yesterday night....

    YESTERDAY NIGHT,

The Princess came there to see him...

She said, “Tomorrow I’ll show you the door where the woman will be..."

After a small silence she said, “You should not die...You should marry her...Go to another country...Start a new life there...".She wiped out her tears...

Suddenly they heard a noise there...They thought that a soldier was coming...So she started moving from there without saying anything...He said, “Wait..." and
Started something to say... but she just said, “Please do it for me..." and she went away.

He opened his eyes. He was in the arena. He saw that the Princess still with closed eyes. She was thinking about the beautiful moments with him especially the first time when he saved her from two tigers .He was the real hero...He saved her from two tigers as a single man.

Then she opened her fairy eyes...

The brave Hero was standing there..

She put a cloth to her left side...He understood that the girl was in left side door...

He shouted that, “I’m doing this for PRINCESS"...suddenly, he opened the right side door!

The Hungry tiger came out and killed him .At the same time, blood came from desolated Princess's mouth. She had taken poison.

The desolated King was understood his mistake. From then no lovers were punished by him.

  27. As for as my view,it was a very interesting love story of a young man
I have a hope none in earth has doing like that the stupid, idiot king.he is not a king.he is a animal.he doesn't know the value of human being.
I thing that the young man surely opened the first door and there was a tiger and then killed by the tiger.the young man doesn't want to survive without his loved one, so he wants to died.doesn't want to marry another woman because he loved the princess deeply.the woman who is in the second door also doesn't like to marry him because she knows that the young man loved the beautiful princess.
And then the princess also suicied herself because she only only wants to marry that the young man.she doesn't imagine her future days to live without him.
After the death of his daughter, the idiot selfish king understood his inhumanity judgement.then afterwards the king didn't give the punishment like that.

After the prince was very felt for the kings judgement. Then she take a poison and she was died. The king felt for his mean act. Then he leave his country.

suddenly he wake up.He understood these all are dream. Then he go to the man.And he told him to take my daughter. And the man got the king's place. The king and the couple live very happily. After a few months the couple got a child. That child name is TIGER.

The King would have certainly enquired about him and would have found that no one else deserved his daughter's hand than this brave and handsome young man.

Since it concerns his daughter,s life he would not have permitted chance to decide his daughter's future.

When the young man opened the door he faced neither the tiger nor the lady but a desolate plain.

The young man opened the first door. He escaped from the tiger. Her lover was ordered to marry the lady. He married. The princess could not agree with that her lover married the other lady. She drank poison and died. The young man was desolate too. He should not marry the other lady and he should face all the problems but he never did it. So he ran fast and opened the second door. The tiger ate the young man. The mob in the arena became desolate. Their love failed but the lady who was in the door , what did she do? she became a widow. She was isolated .
